Media Release (Update)

Hawai’i Island Police have positively identified the female body that was located near the Wainaku Scenic Lookout just outside of Hilo on Saturday morning (February 15).

She has been identified as 24-year-old Megan May Funderburk, originally from Oregon.

The identity had been withheld pending positive identification. However, the body was located in the general area where Funderburk was last seen on Sunday evening (February 9). Positive identification was made by dental record comparison. The records had to be obtained from Oregon.

An autopsy was performed and the preliminary ruling was that Funderburk died as a result of an accidental fall. Foul play is not suspected.

Police detectives with the Area I Criminal Investigation Section are continuing this investigation.

Police ask anyone who may have been in the area of the Wainaku Scenic Lookout on Sunday evening (February 9) to please contact Detective William Brown at (808) 961-2384 or email William.Brown@hawaiicounty.gov or the police department’s non-emergency number at (808) 935-3311.
