A Hilo man has been charged with assault for an incident that sent another man to the hospital.

In response to a 7:30 p.m. report of a fight at Moʻoheau Bandstand in Hilo on Thursday (May 4), police learned that the suspect had punched a 49-year-old Hilo man several times causing serious bodily injury. The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center and then transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, where he remains in stable condition.

The suspect, 48-year-old William Josh Sutton of Hilo was arrested at the scene and taken to the Hilo police cellblock while detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section continued the investigation.

At 10:40 a.m. Friday (May 6), he was charged with first-degree assault. His bail was set a $5,000. He was also charged with contempt of court, with additional bail at $450.

He remains at the cellblock pending his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday (May 9).
