A Kona woman is in critical condition following a crash between a moped and a dump truck in Kailua-Kona.

At approximately 10 a.m. Tuesday (May 26), the moped was merging onto the southbound lane of Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway from Hualālai Road, when it attempted to merge between a dump truck and the trailer it was pulling. The trailer ran over the moped, which was carrying an operator and a passenger. Neither rider was wearing a helmet.

The operator of the moped, a 21-year-old Kailua-Kona man, and his passenger, a 29-year-old Kailua-Kona woman, were taken to Kona Community Hospital. The passenger had critical head injuries. The operator’s injuries were minor.

The operator of the dump truck was not injured.

Police have initiated a negligent injury investigation in connection with this crash.
