During the week of May 23, 2016, through May 29, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 461 DUI arrests compared with 414 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.4 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 625 major accidents so far this year compared with 605 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 10 fatalities, compared with seven fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 10 fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 28.6 percent for fatal crashes.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
