Media Release (update No. 2)

An autopsy was conducted Wednesday (June 8) on the body of the man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting Monday afternoon (June 6) at a home off West Kawailani Street in Hilo.

The medical examiner determined that 25-year-old Kalyp Allen Rapoza of Hilo died from gunshot wounds to the head and body.

A necropsy conducted Tuesday (June 7) determined that a pit bull killed in the same incident also died of gunshot wounds.

As is standard practice in any officer-involved shooting, the Police Department’s Area I Criminal Investigations Section is conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting, and the Office of Professional Standards is conducting an administrative investigation.

The officer who discharged his firearm has been with the Hawaiʻi Police Department for three years. He was not injured. He has been placed on administrative leave pursuant to department policy.
