During the week of June 20, 2016, through June 26, 2016, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 538 DUI arrests compared with 482 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.6 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 714 major accidents so far this year compared with 743 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been 10 fatal crashes on Hawaiʻi Island (one of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 11 fatalities, compared with 10 fatal crashes (two of which had multiple deaths), resulting in 13 fatalities during the same period last year. This represents a decrease of 15.4 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
