Motorcycle Safety

Media Release

Hawaiʻi Island police are reminding motorists and motorcycle operators about the safe use and operation of motorcycles on our roadways.

According to the Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes, “Only one person shall ride a motorcycle unless it is designed to carry two people and has the appropriate seat firmly attached. The operator and/or passenger shall sit facing forward and sit astride the seat, with one leg on each side of the motorcycle. Operators shall have both hands on the handlebars.  Passengers shall not ride in a position which would interfere with or obscure the view of the operator.”

Groups of motorcycles also must follow all traffic laws. Motorcycles can be operated two abreast in a single lane, but may not be operated between lanes of traffic or rows of vehicles.  At no time may motorcycle groups stop traffic or proceed through an intersection while the light is red. Motorcycle operators are granted the same rights and duties as vehicle operators, including obeying all traffic laws and regulations.

“We want to keep everyone on the road safe, including motorists, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians,” said Sergeant Roylen Valera of the Kona Community Policing Section.  “Everyone needs to do their part.”
