During the week of January 1, 2023, through January 8, 2023, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 28 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21. So far this year, there have been 28 DUI arrests compared with 20 during the same period last year, an increase of 40 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 21 major accidents so far this year compared with 15 during the same period last year, an increase of 40 percent.
To date, there was 1 fatal crash, resulting in 1 fatality, compared with 1 fatal crash, resulting in 1 fatality for the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
