Media Release

An unidentified man died following a vehicle-pedestrian crash October 3 in Hilo.

His name is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of his family.

Responding to a 7:43 p.m. call, police determined that a 2007 Dodge pickup was traveling south near the 500 block on Kilauea Avenue, when it struck the male pedestrian who was not in a crosswalk.

The pedestrian was taken to Hilo Medical Center for his injuries and then transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

He was pronounced dead at Queen’s on October 4 at 6:39 a.m. An autopsy  by  the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office determined that he died of injuries sustained in the traffic crash.

The driver of the pickup was not injured and police do not believe that speed or alcohol were factors for his role in the crash.

Police do believe that alcohol was a factor for the pedestrian.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Sergeant Clarence Davies at 961-2332 orclarence.davies@hawaiicounty.gov.  Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the island wide Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.

This is the 23rd traffic fatality this year compared with 16 at this time last year.
