For his proactive police work in two investigations, Officer Cody Correia was honored as Officer of the Month for September 2022 by the Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawai‘i during a ceremony in Hilo on Thursday, October 27, 2022.

In the two-and-a-half years since he has joined Hawai‘i Police Department, Officer Correia has proven himself as a dedicated and reliable officer respected by his peers.

The first investigation for which Officer Correia was recognized occurred in the Mountain View area on September 17. Assigned to the Puna District, Officer Correia was the first on scene at an active domestic dispute. In the course of gathering information from the victim, he learned that the victim’s ex-boyfriend had threatened her and her family and was riding a motorcycle with a firearm within his backpack.

While speaking to the victim, Officer Correia saw a motorcycle driven by the suspect pull up to the area. The man was wearing a backpack that matched the victim’s description and was highly confrontational. Around the same time, additional officers arrived on scene. Officer Correia acted quickly and decisively and the suspect was arrested. The Area I Juvenile Aid Section assisted with the investigation by drafting and executing a search warrant on the suspect’s backpack. He was charged with carrying or possessing a loaded firearm on a public highway, as well as place to keep ammunition, and the firearm was recovered and taken off the street.

Later that month, Officer Correia once again showed a high level of composure, acting quickly to apply a tourniquet to a gunshot victim that helped save the victim’s life.

On September 26, 2022, Officer Correia responded to a report of an unknown disturbance in which a man reported being shot in the face in the Mountain View area. Responding with another officer, Officer Correia noticed that the victim, a 42-year-old man, was bleeding heavily from his left forearm and face.

With little time to think and relying on his training and experience, Officer Correia quickly applied lifesaving measures and was able to stop the bleeding on the man’s arm by using his department-issued tourniquet. The victim was transported to Hilo Medical Center for further medical attention. It was later determined that the gunshot hit a main artery in the victim’s forearm, and a follow-up with a nurse from Hilo Medical Center revealed that the injury sustained by the victim would have potentially been fatal had Officer Correia not applied the tourniquet in the manner that he did.

This is Officer Correia’s first nomination for Officer of the Month, and two of many investigations where he has displayed his strong work ethic, persistence, and dedication to duty. Officer Correia is proactive at his job and has a positive attitude in the community that he serves.

Every month the Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawai‘i honors a police officer in East Hawaii as their officer of the month. Officers are nominated by their supervisors from the police districts in Area I, including Hāmākua, North Hilo, South Hilo, and Puna, and a winner is selected. All officers selected for Officer of the Month are eligible to be selected as the Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawai‘i Officer of the Year.
