Media Release

Hawai’i Island Police are investigating a public accident that occurred in the Puna district, which left a 36-year-old male in critical condition.

On Monday, November 22, 2021, at about 3:00 a.m. (0300 hours), Puna patrol responded to a report of a fisherman in distress at the cliff area off of Paradise Drive in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. Upon arrival, it was determined that a 36-year-old male was fishing off of the cliff at the bottom of Paradise Drive in the Hawaiian Paradise Park area, when a large section of the cliffs edge crumbled causing the male to fall approximately 30 feet to the water’s edge below.

Hawai’i Fire Department personnel responded to the scene where the male was rescued and transported to the Hilo Medical Center in critical condition with head and neck injuries.

There is no foul play suspected, and it was an unfortunate incident due to the unstable terrain that he was fishing from.

Police are reminding the public that even if you are familiar with the area to be cautious and aware of your surroundings and to make sure someone knows where you are at, or as in this case, have someone with you in case there is a mishap so they can call for help.
