Hawai‘i Island police have charged 44-year-old Jacob Walter Umemoto, of Hilo, with abuse family household member and various firearm offenses following a domestic-related incident with his 17-year-old daughter while at a residence on Hookina Place, in Hilo, on Friday evening, December 9, 2022.

The charges against Umemoto stem from a domestic-type incident reported shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Friday, when Hilo patrol officers contacted Umemoto’s 17-year-old daughter at an apartment complex on Waianuenue Avenue in Hilo. She reported that she was struck on her face by her father and placed in a neck choke hold causing her to nearly lose consciousness.

Unrelated to the domestic incident, the juvenile reported that on the same evening her father was in possession of a silver colored revolver-type firearm. Umemoto is prohibited from possessing a firearm and/or ammunition. A loaded firearm was located during the execution of a search warrant related to this investigation.

At 9:30 a.m. Monday, December 13, 2022, after conferring with the County Prosecutor’s Office, detectives from the Area I Juvenile Aid Section charged Umemoto with:

  • Abuse family household member
  • Aggravated Abuse family household member
  • Ownership/possession of a firearm prohibited

  • Ownership/possession of ammunition prohibited
