Media Release

A 20-year-old Kamuela male skateboarder suffered severe injuries following a single-vehicle collision near the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway and Puanuanu Place in Kamuela on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

Responding to an 8:16 p.m. call, police determined that a red 1988 Nissan Hardbody pickup truck was heading west on Mamalahoa Highway when it struck the skateboarder who was riding in the westbound lane of traffic. The rider was then ejected off of the skateboard. The man was transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment where he is currently listed in critical condition.

The driver of the Nissan pickup, a 31-year-old Kamuela man, was not injured in the crash.

Police do not believe that speed or impairment are factors in the collision.

The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a major traffic investigation and is asking for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Officer Adam Roberg at (808) 326-4646 ext. 229 or email at adam.roberg@hawaiicounty.gov.
