MEDIA RELEASE

A female party was killed Sunday (June 20, 2004) from injuries she suffered in a one-vehicle Traffic Casualty on Route 190, the Hawaii Belt Road, 700 feet north of the 22 mile marker, Puuanahulu, North Kona.

Responding to the 9:37 a.m. call on Sunday, Kona patrol officers determined that the victim identified as Sabrina Kapua, F-26, of Paauilo, was a back seat passenger in a 2001 Nissan four door sedan operated by Conrad Chong, M-28, of Holualoa. Their vehicle was traveling north on Route 190, when the driver lost control and the vehicle ran off the roadway, struck an embankment, and overturned. Kapua was unrestrained in the back seat and was ejected from the vehicle.

After the crash, Kapua was taken to the Kona Community Hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Chong and another passenger were taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital where they were treated for their injuries and released.

Police have not determined if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash and an autopsy has been ordered.

Sunday’s death is the 22nd traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 14 for the same time last year.
