Media Release

Less than a week after Hawai‘i Island police arrested and charged a 23-year-old Kailua-Kona man for a string of burglaries, the man was arrested and charged again for burglary and drug offenses while out on supervised release.

On Monday, March 20, 2023, at 11:48 a.m., Kona patrol officers responded to a reported break-in at a dining establishment in the 75-5800 block of Kuakini Highway. An employee reported that upon reviewing security surveillance footage, they saw a man enter the restaurant in the early morning hours while it was closed and remove an electronic device and US currency.

Officers quickly identified the man on the video surveillance footage as Kahuilakane Abraham-Young. Police were familiar with Abraham-Young as he was previously arrested and charged for a string of break-ins that occurred just last week on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, (Report #: 23-025623, https://www.hawaiipolice.com/3-17-23-kailua-kona-man-charged-for-commercial-burglary-habitual-property-crime-and-other-offenses). In that case, police arrested and charged Abraham-Young on March 15 for three separate burglaries, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, and habitual property crime. However, the judge granted him supervised release at his initial court appearance on March 16 rather than holding Abraham-Young in lieu of bail.

In the Monday, March 20 investigation, Kona patrol officers coordinated a search, located Abraham-Young, and took him into custody again later that day at 3:00 p.m, a little over three hours after the most recent burglary was reported. Continuing the investigation, detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigation Section also recovered 2.4 grams of methamphetamine from Abraham-Young.

On Tuesday, March 21, after conferring with the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, Abraham-Young was charged with one count each of:

  • second-degree Burglary
  • third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug
  • habitual property crime
  • conditions of release on bail

The charge of habitual property crime stems from prior convictions of property crime offenses within the last 10 years. His bail was set at $40,000.

Abraham-Young remains in police custody at the Kealakehe Police Station pending his initial court appearance on Wednesday, March 22, in Kona District Court.
