Media Release

During the week of March 21, 2022, through March 27, 2022, Hawai‘i Island police arrested  19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.  

So far this year, there have been 269 DUI arrests compared with 300 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.3 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 173 major accidents so far this year compared with 180 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.9 percent.

To date, there were 9 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths), compared with 7 fatal crashes, resulting in 7 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents is an increase of 28.6 percent for fatal crashes, and 57.1 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
