During the week of April 10, through April 16, 2023, Hawai`i Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 301 DUI arrests compared with 321 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.2 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

After a review of all updated crashes Traffic Services found 275 major accidents so far this year compared with 215 during the same period last year, an increase of 27.9 percent.
To date, there have been 6 fatal crashes, resulting in 7 fatalities, (Rvsd. 2/07/23: one fatal crash reclassified—manner of death was due to natural causes), and (Rvsd. 4/18/23: one fatal crash on 3/07/23 added—cause of death was due to a traffic collision that occurred the day prior), and (one fatal crash had multiple deaths); compared with 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 12 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 50 percent for fatal crashes, and 50 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
