Media Release

The Hawai‘i Police Department would like to remind Hawai‘i residents who are covered offenders, (convicted sex offender or an offender against minors), that they are required to register with the Attorney General and comply with the provisions of covered offender registration (chapter 846E, Hawaii Revised Statutes). Failure to comply with any of the requirements may result in criminal penalties.

On Thursday, April 21, 2022, 77-year-old Peter Joseph Masi Jr of Kailua-Kona was arrested for failure to comply with covered offender registration requirements. An investigation had revealed that Masi Jr had refused to register after being advised by members of the Hawaii Police Department and the Hawaii Attorney General’s Office to do so.

As a result, detectives with the Area II Criminal Investigations Section initiated an investigation that resulted in a warrant being issued for Masi’s arrest. He was subsequently apprehended and taken into custody without incident. Masi’s bail was set at $10,000 and he remained in police custody until his initial court appearance on Friday, April 22.

Since 2019, the Hawaii Police Department have arrested and charged four individuals found to be in violation of Chapter 846E of the Hawaii Revised Statutes.
