Media Release

During the week of May 3, 2021, through May 9, 2021, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 32 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Three of the drivers were under the age of 21.  

So far this year, there have been 460 DUI arrests compared with 315 during the same period last year, an increase of 46 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 282 major accidents so far this year compared with 291 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.1 percent. 

To date, there were 8 fatal crashes, resulting in 8 fatalities, compared with 8 fatal crashes, resulting in 8 fatalities for the same time last year. 

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.

* North Kohala yearly total has been revised to 13 due to an arrest in that district on April 11, 2021, that did not previously appear in our reporting system.
