For his leadership both as a field training officer and senior patrol officer on-duty during a rapidly evolving situation, the Kona Crime Prevention Committee recognized Hawai‘i Police Department Officer Conrad Iranon last month as Officer of Month Award for April 2021.
Officer Iranon was nominated for his actions for an event that took place November 29, 2020, in which he and recruit Officer Rikielee Kamakau responded to a call of an active burglary at a residence on Palani Road in Kailua-Kona. The initial dispatch report conveyed that an unknown suspect had entered an occupied residence and removed their vehicle without permission. The suspect’s stolen vehicle evaded a subsequent police attempt to conduct a traffic stop. However, with the assistance of other officers, the stolen vehicle was located abandoned on Walua Road and the responsible party apprehended nearby.
Additionally, it was determined that the suspect was responsible for a second unauthorized entry into a dwelling in the area of his apprehension.
Officer Iranon was credited with completing an impressive preliminary investigation, which resulted in detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigations Section charging the suspect with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle (auto theft), resist order to stop, first degree burglary, habitual property crime, driving without a license, and first degree unauthorized entry into a dwelling.
He was also credited for his consistent level of initiative and investigative ability during his five years assigned to the Kona Patrol Division.
Every month the Kona Crime Prevention Committee honors a police officer in west Hawaii as their Officer of the Month. Officers are nominated by their supervisors from the various police districts and a winner is selected by the KCPC board of directors. KCPC normally holds a monthly luncheon to honor the officer, however, due to Covid-19 restrictions, no luncheons have been held since March 2020. Instead, KCPC presented plaques to the winners during morning meetings at the Kona Police Station.
All officers selected for Officer of the Month are eligible to be selected as the Kona Crime Prevention Committee’s Officer of the Year.
