Media Release

During the week of May 31, 2021, through June 6, 2021, Hawai`i Island police arrested sixteen (16) motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.  Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.  Three of the drivers were under the age of 21.  

So far this year, there have been 529 DUI arrests compared with 365 during the same period last year. This is an increase of 44.9 percent.  The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 343 major accidents so far this year compared with 349 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.7 percent. 

To date, there were 11 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities, compared with 9 fatal crashes, resulting in 9 fatalities for the same time last year.  This represents an increase of 22.2 percent for fatal crashes, and 22.2 percent for fatalities. 

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
