Hawai‘i Police Department’s South Kohala Community Policing Section would like to congratulate all the winners and thank all the participants who partook in the Kohala Keiki Fishing Derby on Saturday, July 23, 2022, in Kawaihae at the Pua Ka ‘Ilima ‘O Kawaihae Cultural Surf Park.

More than 60 keiki, ages 5 – to 17, from North and South Kohala enjoyed perfect fishing conditions with warm sunny skies. During the event, Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel from South Kohala visited the kids on their jet skis. Personnel from the Departments of Land and Natural Resources and the State of Hawaii Aquatics Division also assisted with the tournament and provided participants with numerous fishing and hunting educational materials and lessons.   

Officers would like to send a special thank you to all the community members and organizations that made this event possible, including Body Glove boat, HPD’s Area 2 Traffic Enforcement Unit, HPD Chaplin Lani Larrua, Nakahara Store, Underground Pizza, Dairy Queen, Waikoloa Luxury Cinemas, Panda Express, VASH, Anuenue Shave Ice, Earls Lunch Shop, Waimea Coffee Company, Starbucks, Hawai‘i Island Creations, Quicksilver, Village Burger, Ace Hardware, Parker Ranch Center, Keep Puako Beautiful, Nakupuna, God Squad, US Army Corp of Engineers, Big Islands Tents, Hulakai, Original Big Island Shave Ice Company, Hawai‘i Big Game and Fishing, Rebel Kitchen, Balera Art Studio, Foster’s Kitchen, and Hawai‘i Island Security and Safety Professional Association. In excess of over $2,000 of gift cards, merchandise and prizes were awarded to the participating keiki and their families.

Hawai‘i Police Department wishes to thank Officer John Kahiapo from the Departments of Land and Natural Resources and the State of Hawaii Aquatics Division for their support, as well as the DARE Hawaii organization for their assistance in food which was made available for event.

A special thanks to all the keiki and parents that attended and made this event happen.
