Media Release

A 48-year-old Ninole man was found dead Sunday morning (January 30) from injuries he sustained in an all-terrain vehicle crash on a private road off Piha-Kahuku Road in Ninole in the District of North Hilo.

The victim was identified as Bill A. Maclean of a Ninole address.

Responding to an 8:10 a.m. call, North Hilo patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a Suzuki Eiger Quadmaster 400 ATV and traveling south on a private road when he lost control, ran off the right side of the road and in to a stream about six feet below the road.

It is unknown at this time when this crash occurred. It may have occurred Saturday night (January 29).

The victim was not wearing a helmet.

The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Because this crash occurred on a private road, the death is not counted toward the official traffic fatality count.
