A 53-year-old North Kohala man died Monday (February 21) as the result of a boating accident off the North Kohala coast.

The victim has been identified as James C. Williams of Hawi.

Around 11:17 a.m. Monday, North Kohala patrol officers and Fire Department rescue personnel responded to a report of a swimmer being struck by a passing boat outside Mahukona Beach Park.

According to witnesses, Williams was swimming approximately 300 yards off shore when he was struck by a boat heading toward Kawaihae. Williams sustained injuries to his shoulder and head and was brought to shore by the boat operator. He was then flown by Fire Rescue helicopter to North Hawai’i Community Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 3:01 p.m.

An autopsy has been requested to determine the exact cause of death. The Department of Land and Natural Resources, which has jurisdiction, will continue the investigation.
