MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police have identified a 55-year-old man whose body was found Thursday (January 31, 2002) in downtown Hilo as Carl Otis Johnston, of no permanent address.

The results of an autopsy conducted Friday indicate that the victim died of a brain injury and fractured skull.

Responding to a 4:46 p.m. call Thursday, Hilo patrol officers found Johnston’s body at the foot of a staircase at the old City Hotel on Beckley Lane near Ponahawai Street.

The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:48 a.m. Friday.

At this time, police do not suspect the man’s death resulted from foul play. Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives believe Johnston’s death resulted from a fall and continue to investigate his death as a coroner’s case until a final determination can be made.
