MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police Tuesday (August 29, 2000) established the identity of a woman whose body was recovered from a plane that had ditched Friday in waters off the Honolii area of South Hilo.

A family member identified the victim as Laveta Rose Reynolds, 61, of North Collinsville, Oklahoma. Her body was recovered from the plane on Monday.

Police are now awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Reynolds was aboard a twin-engine Piper Navajo Chieftain when it ditched with nine persons aboard about 200 yards offshore in about 80 feet of water.

Eight other persons aboard, including the pilot and the victim’s husband, James Reynolds, 64, were rescued and treated for minor injuries.

The plane, owned by Big Island Air of Kailua-Kona, was on a flight from Kona to Hilo when it went down.
