Burglars Make Off With Restaurant Safe 01-22-02

Police are seeking the public’s help in solving a burglary in which a safe was stolen from Harrington’s restaurant in Hilo sometime between Sunday evening and Monday morning (January 1, 2002).

Between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., a thief or thieves broke into the restaurant and bar, located at 135 Kalanianaole Avenue, and stole a safe with cash inside. The total value of the safe and its contents was estimated at $15,000.

Responding officers determined that the thieves had broken into the restaurant through the men’s bathroom window and left with the safe through the main entrance.

Anyone with information about the burglary or the identity of the thieves is asked to call police at 935-3311.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property.
