…charged with attempted first-degree murder and other offenses

Big Island police have charged a 32-year-old Hilo man with six offenses stemming from events Sunday that ended with a serious traffic collision.

Early Tuesday afternoon (August 17), detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section charged Alexander Borrero III with first-degree attempted murder, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, reckless driving, resisting an order to stop and first-degree negligent injury. His bail was set at $500,000.

He was also arrested and charged for unrelated bench warrants and appeared in court Tuesday afternoon on those charges.

His initial court appearance for the new charges is scheduled for Wednesday (August 18) in Hilo District Court. In the meantime, he is being held at Hawai’i Community Correctional Facility unable to post bail.

Police are seeking witnesses who saw the 3 p.m. collision Sunday at the intersection of Highway 11 and Mamaki Street or the events leading up to it. They ask that anyone with information on Borrero’s activities Sunday call Acting Lieutenant Reed Mahuna at 961-2252.
