MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police have identified a 59-year-old female who died in a one-car traffic crash Thursday (June 3, 2004) on Akaka Falls Road near Honomu in South Hilo.

The victim was identified as Jo Anne M. Diotalevi, of Waimea, South Kohala.

Responding to an 11:08 a.m. call, police determined that the victim was driving a Toyota multi-purpose vehicle mauka (west) on Akaka Falls Road when she apparently lost control of the vehicle, which struck a guardrail and overturned.

The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 1:38 p.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit investigators said the victim was not wearing her seat belt, and speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. TEU officers are continuing the investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Thursday’s death was the 20th traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared to 12 at the same time last year.
