MEDIA RELEASE

A 60-year-old Captain Cook man was critically injured Monday (August 16, 2004) when a heavy equipment rock-hauling truck he was driving went out of control and overturned on a construction access road at the Kukio Resort in Kaupulehu, North Kona.

The victim was identified as Tony Uemura.

Responding to a 9:54 a.m. call, Kona patrol officers determined that the fully loaded dump truck overturned, pinning the driver under the machine. Uemura was freed by fellow construction workers before fire rescue and police arrived.

Uemura was flown by helicopter to the Kona Community Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Police have initiated an industrial accident investigation into the incident.
