During the week of January 7-14, 2002, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and four drivers were younger than 21.
So far this year, there have been 28 DUI arrests, a 32 percent decrease from the 41 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 62 major accidents so far this year, compared to 67 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.
There have been no traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to none during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
