During the week of January 21-27, 2002, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 55 DUI arrests, a 33 percent decrease from the 82 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 142 major accidents so far this year, compared to 156 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9 percent.
There has been one traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to none during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
