During the week of January 24 – January 30, 2006, Big Island police arrested eleven motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there has been a total of 66 DUI arrests, compared to 51 during the same period last year, an increase of 29 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a total of 187 major accidents so far this year, compared to 181 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

There have been four traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to five for the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued islandwide.
