During the week of January 30, 2006 – February 6, 2006, Big Island police arrested twenty-five motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three of the drivers arrested were under the age of twenty-one.

So far this year, there has been a total of 91 DUI arrests, compared to 67 during the same period last year, an increase of 36 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a total of 230 major accidents so far this year, compared to 241 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.

There have been five traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to six for the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued islandwide.
