MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of February 7, 2006 – February 13, 2006, Big Island police arrested twenty-one motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there has been a total of 112 DUI arrests, compared to a revised total of 89 during the same period last year, an increase of 26 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a total of 275 major accidents so far this year, compared to a revised total of 285 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent.

There have been six traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to six for the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued islandwide.
