MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of February 21-February 27, 2006, Big Island police arrested twenty-six motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there has been a total of 160 DUI arrests, compared to a revised total of 122 during the same period last year, an increase of 31 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 380 major accidents so far this year, compared to a revised total of 374 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.

There have been six traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to eight for the same period last year, a decrease of 25 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued islandwide.
