During the week of February 28-March 5, 2000, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 235 DUI arrests, a 24 percent increase over the 189 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 45 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 384, compared to 355 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.

There have been six traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to one during the same period last year, an increase of 500 percent.

Two of this year’s six traffic fatalities, or 33 percent, have been alcohol-related.
