During the week of April 15-21, 2002, Big Island police arrested 11 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 244 DUI arrests, a 2 percent increase over the 240 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 676 major accidents so far this year, compared to 708 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.

There have been 14 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to nine during the same period last year, an increase of 56 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to two during the same period last year, an increase of 50 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
