During the week of April 22-28, 2002, Big Island police arrested eight motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and one was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 252 DUI arrests, a 0.4 percent increase over the 251 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 705 major accidents so far this year, compared to 763 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8 percent.
There have been 14 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 10 during the same period last year, an increase of 40 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to the same number during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
