MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of May 6-12, 2002, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 285 DUI arrests, compared to 282 during the same period last year, an increase of 1 percent.

There have been 791 major accidents so far this year, compared to 856 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8 percent.

There have been 14 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 12 during the same period last year, an increase of 17 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to four during the same period last year, a decrease of 25 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
