MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of May 19-26, 2003, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 347 DUI arrests, compared to 319 during the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent.

There have been 897 major accidents so far this year, compared to 862 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.

There have been 13 fatalities so far this year, compared to 14 for the same period last year, a decrease 7 percent. There has been one fatality attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to five DUI-related fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 80 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
