During the week of June 4-10, 2001, Big Island police arrested six motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers arrested was involved in a traffic accident and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 335 DUI arrests, a 38 percent decrease from the 543 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 1,015 major accidents so far this year, compared to 943 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent.

There have been 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 12 during the same period last year, an increase of 17 percent. One of the traffic fatalities this year was related to driving while intoxicated, compared to seven at the same time last year, a decrease of 87 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
