MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of July 1-7, 2002, Big Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 447 DUI arrests, compared to 394 during the same period last year, an increase of 13 percent.

There have been 1,116 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,169 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.

There have been 14 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 16 during the same period last year, a decrease of 13 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to seven during the same period last year, a decrease of 57 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
