MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of November 6-12, 2000, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and two drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 993 DUI arrests, a decrease of 3 percent from the 1,028 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 41 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,898, compared to 1,845 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

There have been 32 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 28 during the same period last year, an increase of 14 percent.

Eight of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 25 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and three have been confirmed as being drug-related.
