During the week of November 10-16, 2003, Big Island police arrested 18 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic collision, and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 891 DUI arrests, compared to 766 during the same period last year, an increase of 16 percent.

There have been 2,040 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,967 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.

There have been 31 fatalities so far this year, compared to 25 for the same period last year, an increase of 24 percent. There have been four fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to the 10 at this time last year, a decrease of 60 percent. There have been two drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
