During the week of December 30, 2013, through January 5, 2014, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 34 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Four were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 29 DUI arrests compared with 15 during the same period last year, an increase of 93.3 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 16 major accidents so far this year compared with 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.3 percent.
As of January 5, there was one traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with zero during the same period last year.
As of January 5, zero fatalities were related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
