During the week of January 1, 2011, through January 9, 2011, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 27 DUI arrests compared with 47 during the same period last year, a decrease of 42.6 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 28 major accidents so far this year compared with 26 during the same period last year, an increase of of 7.7 percent.

So far this year, there were two traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with one fatality during the same period last year, an increase of 100 percent.

So far, the two fatalities this year were not related to drugs only (0), alcohol only (0) or a combination of both (0 of the 2).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
