During the week of January 9, 2012, through January 15, 2012, Big Island police arrested 27 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 58 DUI arrests compared with 52 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.5 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 49 major accidents so far this year compared with 58 during the same period last year, a decrease of 15.5 percent.
So far this year, there were no traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with three during the same period last year, a decrease of 100 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
