During the week of January 13, 2014, through January 19, 2014, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 29 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 82 DUI arrests compared with 57 during the same period last year, an increase of 43.9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 66 major accidents so far this year compared with 69 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been three traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with two during the same period last year, an increase of 50 percent.

To date, no fatalities were related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
