During the week of February 19, 2008, through February 25, 2008, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 206 DUI arrests compared with 191 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 288 major accidents so far this year compared with 355 during the same period last year, a decrease of 19 percent.

So far this year, there have been seven traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with seven during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
